Chopped Pots are an agreement between competitors to "equally share potential earnings" instead of competing for them. The prevalence of Chopped Pots has come to GST's attention. GST has always counted on the size of its purses to attract new, serious talent. Some call it sportsmanship to Chop the Pot, but GST, as of now, maintains a policy that Chopped Pots circumvent Competition Requirements --- bi-passing the thrill and competitiveness of the Finals.
To combat Chopped Pots, which some see as "greed", GST is pondering changing the GST Standard Purse. GST is considering creating a Finals Runner-up of 15%.
If so this percentage will come directly out of whatever percentage of the League Purse the League Champion earns. Playoff Pots will remain the same amount, but will increase somewhat since 2nd Place will no longer be a part of the equation.
My question to the membership is: do you want this change? Should GST endorse Chopped Pots? Is it even POSSIBLE to curtail Chopped Pots?

I don't think it's possible to completely curtail them. However, I think having a runner-up prize closer to the overall champ prize would help with this issue. Especially in such large leagues (14,16,18 etc) we all know it can be a game of inches that decides the final champion and yet the disparity between 1st and 2nd prize money seems disproportionate compared to what I've seen over the years. I think it's a good idea you have personally.

Coming from the GST Ultimate League (16 teams, $175 per) having a 2nd place payout that falls short of the entry fee by a $1 ($174) leaves a bit of a sour taste in your mouth. It's a very competitive league and one would hope to bank some money for future seasons by placing second. I would prefer a decent bump in 2nd place money.

I personally feel top 3 to 5 should be rewarded. As with most GST leagues it is all or nothing. Personally I do not care for the trickle down payments for 2nd place on down. Not to be sarcastic but who really cares about a payout of 5 to 10 dollars. When you are paying 75 up to 500 for a buy in and you place 2nd to get what? Not enough to even get a buy in for next year! If you do not get to finals the other playoff games are not meaningful at all to most and do not tend to their teams as they should. I play in enough of your leagues(and long enough) to see this happen every year. Make meaningful payouts that are worth something and see the competition play to the end like you want them too.
Until you change payouts you will always get the finals to agree to split pot. Does it sacrifice the competition of the. I do not think so as you still are competing for 1st place and bragging rights and an invite to tournament of champions the following year.

Another reason for you to commit to a top 3 or 5 payout will be less work for you at the end of season.
If you put it up to a vote I would love to see the outcome.

I counter these arguments with the fact everybody knows who the Champions are, the Divisional Champions, and even the Wild Cards -- but there's not so many who can name the Champion runnerups.
Also, remember Playoff Pots are COMBINED with Season Ending Pots -- so there is often more won by 2nd Place than it looks, unless that team came from outside the Top Teams.
I hear what you guys are saying though, it's sounding pretty unanimous right now. I'll wait for people to get back to baseball though to make my final decision.
Till then -- keep inputting.

2nd place should atleast get their cost of the league entry fee back. I'm a fan of chopped pots, but if the 2nd place prize is increased, obviously the need for a chopped pot wouldn't take place as often. I don't think 3rd - 5th place should be paid anything, with all due respect to Comets comments above. Comets comments, say that real fast, hahaha. I'm just having fun with ya Comets, but I am definitely in favor of increasing the payout for runner up. It is a big deal getting to the championship game. Especially with the fierce competition in the GST leagues. Damn good competition.
