Its strange, the 5 teams with the highest winning percentage in a season in baseball history includes the Chicago Cubs, Pittsburgh Pirates, Chicago White Sox, and Cleveland Indians.
The highest winning percentage, and one of the all-time great teams was the 1906 Cubs, featuring the Hall-of-Fame double play combination of SS Joe Tinker, 2B Johnny Evers, and 1B Frank Chance. They also had one of the greatest pitching staffs ever: Jack Taylor, Mordecai (Three Finger) Brown, Orval Overall, Jack Pfiester, Carl Lundgren, and Babe Adams. During an era where pitchers were setting records that will NEVER be broken in IP and Wins---the Cubs went with a 6 MAN ROTATION! They are the ONLY pitching staff with 5 pitchers with ERA's under 2.00--the only OTHER club to do it was the 1907 Cubs! Pitching and defense! Sound familiar?
They lost in the World Series that year, but set the 10th All-Time Winning Percentage the next year and WON the World Series, and for good measure, won the World Series the next year also. This without any pitcher getting 225 IP.
The Cubs were to go to 7 more World Series after that (last in 1935), never winning one again. You may not have known these facts--but many Cubbies fan do! That is why, even after 103 years since they won the World Series, the longest streak of them all----they still LOVE their Cubbies!
